எப்படி? என்று கேள்வி கேட்பதோடு ஆராய்ட்சி செய்து பார்க்கும் துறுதுறுப்பு அவரிடம் இருந்தது. ஒருமுறை கோழி அடைகாத்து குஞ்சு பொறிப்பதை பார்த்து தானும் முட்டைகள் மேல் அமர்ந்து குஞ்சு பிறக்குமா? என்று முயன்று பார்த்திருக்கிறார் எடிசன். நமக்கு நகைப்பாக இருக்கலாம். ஆனால் பிஞ்சு வயதிலேயே கேள்வி கேட்கும் அவரின் செயல்பாடுகள்தான் பிற்காலத்தில் பல்வேறு கண்டுபிடிப்புகளை நிகழ்த்த அவருக்கு உதவியது. ஆரம்பித்திலேயே எடிசன் பள்ளியைவிட்டு வெளியேறியதால் அவர் இரயில் வண்டியில் செய்த்தித்தாள் விற்கும் வேலை பார்க்கத்தொடங்கினார். அங்கும்கூட அவர் ஒரு ரயில்பெட்டியில் ஒரு சிறு அச்சு இயந்திரத்தை வைத்து தானே செய்தித்தாள்களை தயாரிக்கத் தொடங்கினார். மேலும் இரயில் வண்டியின் ஒரு சிறிய ஆராய்ட்சி கூடத்தை உருவாக்கி நேரம் கிடைக்கும்போதெல்லாம் வெவ்வேறு ஆராய்ட்சிகளை செய்துபார்ப்பார். ஒருமுறை இரயில் குலுங்கி நின்றபோது அவரது ஆய்வுகூட்த்தில் இருந்த பாஸ்பரஸ் கீழே கொட்டி இரயில்பெட்டி தீப்பிடித்துக்கொண்டது. ஆத்திரமடைந்த இரயில் அதிகாரி எடிசனின் அச்சு இயந்திரத்தையும், ஆய்வுகூடப் பொருட்களையும் வீசி எறிந்ததோடு, எடிசனின் கன்னத்தில் தன் பலம் கொண்ட மட்டும் ஓங்கி அறைந்தார். அந்த அடியின் தாக்கத்தால் எடிசனுக்கு வாழ்நாள் முழுவதும் ஒருபக்கம் காதுகேளாமல் போனது என்பது வரலாற்று உண்மை. அந்த அதிகாரியால் எடிசனின் உடலில் மட்டும்தான் காயம் விளைவிக்க முடிந்ததே தவிர அவரின் உள்ளத்தையும் வைராக்கியத்தையும் துளிகூட அசைக்க முடியவில்லை. அந்த விபத்து நிகழ்ந்த அதே இரயில் நிலையத்தில் ஒரு சிறுவன் தண்டவாளத்தில் விளையாடிக் கொண்டிருந்தான். அவனை நோக்கி ஒரு ரயில்வண்டி விரைவதைக்கண்ட எடிசன் தான் கையிலிருந்த செய்தித்தாள்களை தூக்கி எறிந்துவிட்டு ஓடிப்போய் தகுந்த நேரத்தில் அந்த சிறுவனைக் காப்பாற்றினார். அந்த ரயில் நிலையத்தின் தலைமை அதிகாரியான அச்சிறுவனின் தந்தை மகிழ்ந்துபோய் எடிசனுக்கு நன்றி சொன்னதோடு அவருக்கு தந்தி அனுப்பும் முறையை கற்றுக்கொடுத்தார். அதனை விரைவாக கற்றுக்கொண்ட எடிசன் தந்தி அனுப்பும் வேலைக்கு மாறினார். அந்த வேலையில் சேர்ந்தபிறகுதான் அவர் ஒவ்வொரு கண்டுபிடிப்பாக நிகழ்த்த தொடங்கினார். உதாரணத்திற்கு இரவு நேரங்களில் இரயில் அதிகாரிகள் ஒவ்வொரு மணி நேரமும் சமிக்ஞை அனுப்ப வேண்டிய அவசியம் இருந்த்து. அதனை ஏன் தானியக்க மயமாக்ககூடாது என்று சிந்தித்த எடிசன் அந்த முறையை கண்டுபிடித்தார். பின்னர் ஒரு முறை ரயில் நிலையத்தில் இருந்தபோது அங்கு எலித்தொல்லை அதிகமாய் இருப்பதை பார்த்தார். உடனே எலிகளை செயலிழக்க செய்யும் கருவியை கண்டுபிடித்தார். இப்படி பார்வையில் பட்ட பிரச்சினைகளுக்கெல்லாம் அவர் தீர்வு காணத்தொடங்கினார். 1876 ல் அவர் மெட்னோ பார்க்கில் புகழ்பெற்ற தனது ஆராய்ட்சிகூடத்தை அமைத்தார். அந்த ஆராய்ட்சிகூடத்தில்தான் உலகம் போற்றும் பல கண்டுபிடிப்புகளை அவர் நிகழ்த்தினார். அலெக்ஸாண்டர் கிரகம்பெல் உருவாக்கிய தொலைபேசியை காவர் டிரான்ஸ்மிட்டர் என்ற பாகத்தை கண்டுபிடித்தன் மூலம் எடிசன்தான் செம்மைப் படுத்தினார். அதன்பிறகு ஃபோனோகிராப் என்ற குரல் பதிவு கருவியை கண்டுபிடித்து அறிவியல் உலகையே வியப்பில் ஆழ்த்தினார் எடிசன். எடிசனின் கண்டுபிடிப்பிகளிலேயே ஃபோனோகிராப்தான் ஆக பிரசித்திப்பெற்றதாக கருதப்படுகிறது. ஒலிக்கான சாதனத்தை உருவாக்கியபிறகு அவரது கவணம் ஒளியின் பக்கம் திரும்பியது. மின்விளக்குகளைப்பற்றி ஆராயத் தொடங்கினார் ஒரே மின்னலையில் பல விளக்குகளை ஒளிரச் செய்ய முடியுமா? என எடிசன் சிந்தித்தார். நிச்சயம் முடியாது என்று அடித்துக்கூறினர் சமகால விஞ்ஞானிகள். ஆனால் முடியாது என்ற சொல்லையே தனது அகராதியிலிருந்து அகற்றியிருந்த எடிசனுக்கு அது தீர்க்ககூடிய சவாலாகவேபட்டது. அவரும் அவரது 50 உதவியாளர்களும் பணியில் இறங்கினர். எடிசனுக்கு தேவைப்பட்டது மின்சக்தியின் தாக்கத்தை தாங்ககூடிய அதே நேரத்தில் சுற்றளவு குறைவாக உள்ள ஒளிரும் ஒரு பொருள் அதாவது விளக்குகளின் உட்பகுதியில் உள்ள ஃபிளமெண்ட். பல்வேறு கனிமங்களை கொண்டு கிட்டதட்ட 1500 சோதனைகளை செய்துபார்த்தார் எடிசன். அதன்மூலம் மின் விளக்குகளைப்பற்றி ஒன்றல்ல இரண்டல்ல சுமார் மூவாயிரம் கோட்பாடுகளை வகுத்தார். அவற்றுள் ஒரே ஒரு கோட்பாடுதான் அவர் தேடிய விடையைத் தரக்கூடியாதாக இருந்த்து. ஒரு நூலிழையில் கார்பன் சேர்த்து ஐந்து மணிநேரம் தீயில் சூடுகாட்டி பின்னர் குளிரவைத்தார். அந்த கார்பன் இழையை காற்று அடைப்பட்ட ஒரு கண்ணாடிக்குள் வைத்து அதனுள் மின்சாரம் பாய்ச்சிபார்ப்பதுதான் எடிசனின் நோக்கம். அந்த கார்பன் இழை மிகவும் மெல்லியதாக இருந்ததால் பலமுறை ஒடிந்துபோனது. ஆனால் ஒடியவில்லை எடிசனின் தன்னம்பிக்கை. பலமுறை முயன்று கடைசியாக அந்த கார்பன் இழையை ஒடியாமல் கண்ணாடிக்குள் வைத்து மின் விசையை அழுத்தினார். மின் விளக்கு எறிந்தது. சமகால விஞ்ஞானிகளின் கூற்று சரிந்தது. எடிசனின் அதீத திறமை உலகுக்கு புரிந்தது. நமக்கு மின்ஒளி கிடைத்த அந்த வரலாற்று சிறப்புமிக்க நாள் 1879 ஆம் ஆண்டு அக்டோபர் 21 ஆம் நாள். அதன்பிறகு டைனோமோ, பல்வேறு அளக்கும் கருவிகள், சினிமா கேமராவின் முன்னோடியான கெனோட்டோகிராப், எக்ஸ்ரே படங்களை பார்க்க உதவும் கருவிகள் என அவரது கண்டுபிடிப்புகள் தொய்வின்றி தொடர்ந்தன. 1931 ஆம் ஆண்டு அக்டோபர் 18 ந்தேதி 86 ஆவது வயதில் அவரது உயிர் பிரிந்தது, அதுவரை ஆராய்ட்ச்சியும் கண்டுபிடிப்புமே அவரது உயிர் மூச்சாக இருந்தன. தன் வாழ்நாளில் அவர் நிகழ்த்திய மொத்த கண்டுபிடிப்புகளின் எண்ணிக்கை எவ்வளவு தெரியுமா?? 1300 சரித்திரத்தில் வேறு எந்த கண்டுபிடிப்பாளரும் கிட்டகூட நெருங்க முடியாத எண்ணிக்கை அது. அதனால்தான் அவரை கண்டுபிடிப்புகளின் தந்தை என்று நினைவில் வைத்திருக்கிறது வரலாறு. எண்ணிலடங்கா கண்டுபிடிப்புகளை செய்த தாமஸ் ஆல்வா எடிசனின் தாரக மந்திரம் என்ன தெரியுமா?
